This week we had a fine cool evening, with no wind - good conditions for our monthly individual time trial held at the motor racing circuit covering 5 laps, a distance of 17km, with riders starting at 15 second intervals and racing against the clock. There was some very good times posted on Tuesday with some riders showing excellent early season fitness.

Race Results for 28th August:
On Tuesday night 20 hardy cyclists turned up at the motor racing circuit for our weekly 6 lap, 20km handicap race. Because we were riding clockwise around the circuit there was a very strong headwind going up the main straight and some very tricky side winds on the loops around the back of the circuit. Several riders learned the hard way that our light weight bikes with deep rimmed wheels can be difficult to control in a gusty crosswind!
Josh Barnes rode a great race from a 4min handicap to beat John Carman and Brad Setters (from the same handicap group) in a time of 33.42min. Due to the strong wind the lap times were almost one minute slower than average.
From this Sunday, 2 September, through the summer our morning rides will start at 8am from Top Gear Cycles in Tuwharetoa Street.
Race Results for 21st August:
Once again a cool night with a strong westerly giving the riders a hard time on the back part of the circuit, for the 20km race. A nice tail wind down the main straight saw some of the more powerful riders hitting close to 60km per hour.
Patrick Bevan had a great ride, starting from scratch and giving the first group 6min he had passed the whole field by the 4th of 6 laps to finish in a time of 31.08min. Bigger handicap for you next week Patrick!
Groups 2 and 3 teamed well with most riders staying with their group (sheltering from the headwind) throughout the race.
Nicky Barnes was quickest in Group 1 with 38.55 and Nicholas 40.30, Tessa completed 5 laps; Brent Cameron and Craig Greenwood in Group 2 did 36.45, Faith 36.50 with Jessie and Ben solving the problems of the world as they cruised through the 6 laps in 41.30; the whole of Group 3 finished in a time of 34.45min; and in Group 4 Spud Douglas just managed to outsprint Cameron Todd in a time of 33.10min.
Thank you once again to Mike Rendell and this week’s assistant Mike Langley for the time-keeping.
Sunday bunch rides will be leaving from Top Gear Cycles at 9am, as usual. The faster group will go back to 8am starts on 2 September.

Freezing conditions saw slightly reduced numbers from the previous weeks racing, roughly 30 people turned up to brave the “almost snow”, and were keen to get racing to try and warm up.
Three groups started off the line, with two minutes between each group.
Group one managed to keep the lead, Jo Donaldson (Go Girl!!)was first over the finish line in a time of 36 minutes and 50 seconds, closely followed by Dave Forsyth, and Stuart Hickman.
The fastest times of 29 minutes and 50 seconds, for the 6 lap circuit, were recorded by
John Carman
Dean Barnes

Big thanks to Mike Rendall for time keeping in the bitter cold.
