As we descend into winter, there has still been allot of cycling to keep us motivated. The first race of interclub competition with Rotorua, and Tokoroa was a great success and was enjoyed by those who made the trip over to Rotorua. It’s our turn to run the race on June 24th and hope to see many of our riders on Huka circuit. Remember, this is about fun and participation.

Sam Dobbs and Corby Price have been selected to represent New Zealand and ride for the New Zealand development squad in races over in Australia. This is an expensive trip (they are not supported in any way with $ from
BikeNZ), and the club will assist in a fun fundraising evening, also on June 24th, for them. More details later in the newsletter.

We are running a training Camp for our junior racers on the 8th of July. This will be a great opportunity for our younger riders to pick up on some good riding technique and we will be giving specific drills for them to do.

No doubt you will have heard about the shocking news of Dave Joyce and his wife Sirpa being hit while cycling on Poihipi road. The club has been active pushing for the widening of Poihipi road over the years (submissions to council etc) and this last incident has given this issue a lot of attention. Keith Crate is aggressively pushing this at the council level and the club (along with BikeTaupo and the Taupo Cycle Challenge) is giving him our full support.

Unfortunately, the issue is more than just widening the road, there is a larger issue in New Zealand is with intolerant driving, as we all witness both when on the bike and as we drive around.

Ensure that you are prepared when riding in the winter – warm clothing, good lights, flashing rear light, and light/bright clothes, especially when riding near dusk and in foggy conditions. Even when riders are in the “Right” we are just so vulnerable.

Tour de France is not far off and I will be testing the theory that the more cycling you watch the faster you think you become.
