Nigel Tipene is the 2012 Velodrome director:
Velodrome racing will continue all through the winter and will be focusing on improving on the existing skills and fitness of our riders in preparation for next year’s WBOP Track champs.

Where - Plateau, June 24th, 4-6pm Sam and Corby have been selected for the New Zealand developmental squad and will be travelling to Australia. They had a very intensive training camp over Queens Birthday weekend.

Brad Setters, who heads up our Junior program is organising a training camp for our Junior cyclists. We will split up our juniors into 2 groups based on ability & experience.

This is a 70km or 40km road ride which has been running since July 1999, with rider numbers increasing each year to around 800 cyclists. Starting and finishing at the quaint Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, this is a FUN RIDE – and you’re guaranteed to enjoy the quiet country roads and the scenery.

The Winter Fun Ride Series is a 3 week fun ride event held over 3 Sundays in August with two distance options available each week. The 3 rides
are suitable for all levels of ability. I recommend these rides, a great way to kick off training in the Spring.

Remember that BikeNZ requires cyclists that do 3 events to become a member. It’s the best deal in town.

On behalf of the Taupo Cycling Club Committee, I would like to thank everybody, who made the WBOP champs a success.

The summer series started Tuesday the 7th Feb. Thanks to Avantiplus and PaknSav for their continued support of this series. We had 81 riders on Tuesday – would like to see 100+. There are a series of 8 races at the car track and will finish with 1 road race on Sunday April 1st.. The dates are timed to coincide with daylight savings finishing, and the road race slots in between some busy race weekends.

We have a total of 15 juniors that have been selected for the Junior Program – up from 4 last year.
Those riders are:
· U19 - Frank Sutton, Nicole Scott, Corby Price.
· U17 - Jaymie King, Brendan Hawkins, Aidan Hawkins, Sam Dobbs, Lewis Eccles, Kyle Smith, Isla Sando.
· U15 - Claire Hume, Matilda Fulljames.
· U13 - Finn Giddy, Kiann Watts, Flynn Fierro.

From Monday 16th January 6:00pm -7:00pm , I am going to be running skills and drills sessions to encourage new riders to the Velodrome. I will focus on track etiquette, confidence, and skills to help people feel better about racing at the Velodrome on the Wednesday nights. I ask people to bring helmets, shoes and pedals. The Taupo cycling club has various sized Track bikes for loan. This is concentrating on new riders.

There are 2 groups, The A group does about 3hrs, the B group about 2 hrs. . Sunday rides leave from the Farmers at 8:00am. We will constantly regroup. Be prepared - bring 2 water bottles, food, spare tube & pump and most importantly some $ for a coffee at the end of the ride.

2012 Youth Development Program – Expression of Interest:
Taupo Cycling Club will once again be running a Junior Development Program aimed at riders in the U15 - U17 age group.

Club Champs Decider & Final Race of the Summer Series 2010!! - (full results are available in results tab)

Summer had certainly disappeared for the last race of the Top Gear Cycles sponsored Summer Race series held at the Velodrome last Saturday. No rain but quite a cool wind at the Velodrome bought fewer riders to the final event. Spot prize winner for the day was Junior - Kyle Goucher who put in a great effort racing some of the older guys.

We had fantastic weather again for the second race of the series, the out and back course along Tukairangi Road is a tough one, with a deceptive up hill climb on the way out and
slight head wind on the way back this made for a challenging race.

A beautifully calm and clear night - we didn’t need to turn our lights on until about 5 laps into the race.

Kelvin, Jo, Crunchy, Sheryl, Ken and Paul all started as Group 1 and raced? 6 laps in 35.02min

Groups 2 and 3 raced 7 laps with Spud, Josh and Nick winning ‘on the road’ in a time of 36.55min - they had a 4min start? on the scratch group who were led home by Paddy who did the fastest net time of the night - 33.15min with Wayne next in 33.20?

On Saturday afternoon 16 Taupo Cycling Club riders turned out for the second race of our AvantiPlus Taupo Winter Series.

This event was an individual time trial held on Tukairangi Road - this road is quite testing, being slightly uphill on the way out with a steep uphill section on the way back again. It was a perfect day for road cycling with no wind and relatively warm, compared to the lousy weather we have had to put up with recently.
